Stoker Scene Analysis & Horror Genre Analysis

Stoker- Staircase disadvantage sequence.

During this sequence the two characters India and Charlie as there is a contrast between the two as they seem to try and control who is more superior than the other. India begins at the bottom of the stairs and the shot is show from a High angle, this is used to make India appear to be smaller making her seem inferior, this adds to the impact and irony as she is at the bottom of the stairs. However Charlie is at the top of the stairs and is shot at a low angle making his appear bigger therefore more superior towards India. The director as used to to help the audience identify who is more powerful than the other in the scene, however this will tend to cause confusion as the shots shift and so does the position of the characters and where they are placed in the scene. India begins to move up the stairs as charlie moves down, which then turns towards it being the two shot, this is the only time the two are seen to be level and balanced throughout the whole sequence. As this brings the two characters together it makes the audience believe that they will have an equal balance of power over each other therefor making them both superior in the scene, however there is a shift again as it turns to India becoming superior towards Charlie as she is at the top of the stairs instead of him, this would show an conclusion towards who is the main superior between the two and it shows to be India. In this sequence there is little dialogue between the two, Charlie appears to have the main lines as he appears to have started and ope up the conversation and cause India to move, it starts with Charlie mentioning that he feels as if he is at a disadvantage due to India standing below him. Compared towards India, she has a monotone sounds when she speaks and responds to him with the small responses of "Why?" and "Because I didn't know you existed until today?". She appears to only question responses and add to the monotone sounds in her voices adds to show how she feels uninterested with the conversation, she could also be trying to intimidate Charlie with the lack of tone in her voice with then again trying to prove her dominance and power over him and the scene overall. With that small dialogue and the angle that the camera is shot adds to the impact of the disadvantage Charlie is feeling towards India. The scene ends with Charlie walking down the stairs to soon being out of shot with India looking down at him this will overall make India the most superior out of her and Charlie and showing the audience who the main focus is of the story and who is the most powerful between the two and in their starting relationship. Overall for the audience this scene holds tension between Charlie and India as they show who is trying to hold dominance between and overall holds to be India which later could hold a strong significance later on in the Film.Image result for stoker staircase disadvantage

Horror Genre in the movie scene.

Horror used to be seen as the least popular genre of the movie scene as it wasn't the most pleasing to witness due to its grotesque scene and topics the films shown towards audiences. Most of the issues started of it being labelled of it being only films for "freaks" and there was only a certain point of "threshold" that horror movies could contain and be able to show towards and audience, as if it went past the so called "threshold" people would class it as a horror film and claim it to be to impact of horror so that it couldn't be shown to anyone. However over the years the view point on Horror films have changed, as there has been a different outlook on how to create horror films as it has also been used in games and TV shows as its not only films, it has become more popular during the 21st century as film directors and writers have been able to adapt how a horror film is made and how to create an impact on the audiences. This is due to being able to adapt towards the mise-en-scene during horror films and see what create a higher impact and what will keep audiences on the edge of their seats throughout the film, most of this is achieved with how the lighting shifts and how the camera will shift and how the scene will be shot, it will also overall depend on how the story is presented and what will keep the audiences interested. For example the SAW series, the story line of the film is the same as there is always a group of people that end up dying throughout different challenges and scenes, but what keeps it different is how the backstory and reasons for why the people are there, what adds to the impacts of the tensions and the horror of this film series is mainly based on the entire gore sequences and elements throughout the entire film, due to it being so intense and gruesome towards the human eye its what mainly keeps viewers watching as it appears to be so realistic and traumatizing for the characters during each scene. The injuries and deaths throughout the film are taken into exaggeration as the non-digetic music will continue to speed up and become louder to increase the tension making the viewers more scared and on edge as they realise that a character will die and undergo the pressure they go through to figure out how to survive. The directors also tend you use a lot of extreme close ups on a characters face or certain parts of the body to show what danger that they will be in or to show the fear in their faces, this can also be used with close ups and quick shots as this will quicken the pace and the tension as it will build up the impact of the characters fear and the audiences fear also.
