Blade runner & The Lady from Shanghai Comparison

'The director is always the most important influence of the film', Compare how far your two chosen films support this statement.

Blade runner is classified as a film noir, consisting of its dark, shadowy and depressive colour scheme and lighting aesthetic, within its elements throughout the film. Deckard is the most noticeable of the 19 40's influences, attired in earthly toned suits with an emotionally detached and anti authoritarian disposition.
The original text for the film was inspired by "Do androids dream of electric sheep" which was composed in the 1960's by Philip Dick, the appropriation was composed in 1982 and holds elements of different themes such as "Cyber Punk" with its futuristic theme and style throughout the film.
With Ridley Scott, as an auteur he has a key elements that are seen throughout his film and are strongly shown in Blade runner and the main style is having a strong female as the lead of his film and in film noir it is mainly seen as the femme fatal's, this is mainly due to the fact he had a strong and close relationship with his mother so he used that elements in his film. The idea of a femme fatal is for a women to appear to be weak for others but is strong and holds a strong and importance in the film and usually ends with the female betraying the main male protagonist.
Auteurism is the identification of the director's stylists traits, view of people in the world, ideas about politics, history, social order, psychology, sexuality and power. The director's structure of basic of thematic and stylistic traits. A kind of abstract pattern of ways of seeing and understanding the world cinematically.
Scott draws his own storyboards during pre-production as he likes to have and use his own visions and ideas for his work, this is what helps create the stunning visuals in his films and shows the differences in styles compared to others, an example would be the cars in blade runner 16 of them was built for the set to create the visual of futurism he wanted, alongside with the use of rain and the weather to achieve that urban feel towards his film however with the use of pathetic fallacy caused a problem with the ending scene as it was pouring down with rain the actors and the crew became ill due to the cold and constant filming.

In Comparison with Orsen Welles and his film 'The Lady from Shanghai', the reason this film went into production was because Welles he was left in debt because he made 'Around the world in 80 day's' he was too ambitious with his production and his views and ideas were too extreme and wanted an over the top production.
As the same as Blade Runner, The Lady in Shanghai was based of a book called 'If I die before I wake' and it became and adaptation of the plot.Fascinated by gorgeous Mrs. Bannister, seaman Michael O'Hara joins a bizarre yachting cruise, and ends up mired in a complex murder plot.
Film noir is traditionally shot in black and white with minimal lighting to create the shadowing and infamous silhouette, mainly to reflect on the world wars and show the political side in film especially due to film productions not having enough financial support for the production lighting and to create artificial lighting so the use of natural lighting and shadows helped enhance the noir (black) essence of the film.
Throughout the film of The Lady in Shanghai multiple editing errors can be seen due towards the fact the production studio kept messing with the editing, this is the reason for awkward angles, camera shots and scenes and also due to the fact Rita would have constant close ups and always be seen throughout the film the main element of Welles own filming is the ending mirrors sequence, with cross fades and black outs, filming in mirrors is a strong and a popular filming style that Welles uses in his films.
During production of The Lady in Shanghai there was production issues during the boat trip, as Welles wanted to go into a rainforest area and travel far for production in hot temperature area's, however this was a struggle for the actors and the production crew as it was difficult to move the cameras and all the equipment and the actors was working in excrutiating temperatures which made it uncomfortable when filming, this was similar for Blade Runner as in the ending of the film the actors was forced to act in the freezing rain which ended up with them gaining a cold and be in pain from the cold.
